If there’s one thing that Steamboat does well, it’s happy hour. There is nothing better than sitting at a bar down by the river with a cold drink in your hand, chatting with friends and family at the end of the day. Locals love it, visitors love it and we put together a list of the best places for you to love it too.
Best Outdoor Space: Aurum
With stunning river views (a happy hour must, in our opinion!) plus a grassy lawn, Aurum’s outdoor space can’t be beat. Snag a table on the patio that overlooks the Yampa and wave to the paddleboards and kayaks as they float by. Kids can run around on the grass and many times you can listen to live music while you enjoy an ice cold drink. A selection of happy hour appetizers are 50% off, select drinks are $8 with $6 glasses of both red and white wine and half priced drafts. Reservations are recommended but this is one place that can’t be beat!
Where: 811 Yampa St.
When: Daily, from 4:30-6 p.m.
What: 50% off happy hour appetizers, $8 happy hour drinks, $6 red and white wine, ½ price draft beer
Try: The Crispy Curried Cauliflower, Nachos and Duck Wings washed down with their classic margarita or the always summer-y Aperol Spritz.
Best Patio: Taco Cabo
Set back from Yampa Street, Taco Cabo’s patio is naturally shaded by a huge tree and has great river views, too. It’s a great, super casual place to cool off with a margarita at the end of the afternoon. Happy hour consists of drink specials including shots, beers and mixed drinks and if you’re hungry, try one or two of their tacos as well.
Where: 729 Yampa St.
When: Daily, from 4-6 p.m.
What: $4-$6 shots; $3-$5 beer; $5-$9 drinks including margaritas and mojitos
Try: The house margarita with an Al Pastor taco
Best River View: E3
River views at E3 Chophouse can’t be beat, mainly because you can pull up an Adirondack chair and sit, well, right on the river. If you don’t feel like getting splashed from passing rafts, snag a table farther back on the grass or up on the patio – the views are still great and you can use that table to hold your food – with an extensive happy hour menu, you’re going to need it. Bonus: go early and turn your happy hour into your dinner!
Where: 701 Yampa St.
When: Daily, from 3-5 p.m.
What: A selection of appetizers, plus soups, salads and sandwiches, all at discounted prices; cocktails from $5-$7, wines from $6-$8, $5 drafts and $4 domestic and imports.
Try: The truffle fries and bacon wrapped dates; lobster mac and cheese if you’re feeling fancy and the ½ pound steak burger if you’re looking for a meal.
Best Place to Get OUT of the Sun: Laundry
If you’ve been in the sun all day, you might need some shade….there are plenty of great spots downtown where you can find cold AC and colder drinks. Try Laundry, downtown on 11th St, famous for their “Wine by the Time” at happy hour – select wines are the same price as the time. If wine isn’t your jam, all cocktails are $1 off and the daily house-infused cocktail is only $8.
Where: 127 11th St.
When: Daily, from 4:30-6 p.m.
What: $7 snacks and $5 tacos plus “Wine by the Time” – select wines that are the same price as the time
Try: Pimento cheese and shoestring potatoes, and get there right at 4:30 for a $4.30 glass of wine!
Best Spot for Kids: Rex’s
Rex’s Grill not only has a large patio for outdoor seating complete with umbrellas to shade you from that hot afternoon sun, but they also have a large lawn with various toys and games for kids (think hula hoops, ping pong and more). With family friendly food – pizza! wings! nachos! – everyone can find a snack or early dinner that suits them. Grownups can sit back and relax – there is often live music during happy hour – while the kids play out on the lawn.
Where: 3190 S. Lincoln Ave.
When: Daily, 3-5 p.m.
What: A selection of discounted pizza and appetizers plus $5 Colorado drafts, $5 well drinks and $1 off wine
Try: The Shroom Bucket or Hummus for an appetizer, followed by a pizza and topped off with a $5 local draft from Storm Peak Brewing Co.
