Take a fall hike
With beautiful leaves and cooler temps, fall is the best time to hike in Steamboat. Spend an afternoon on the trail soaking up the colors and change in seasons.
Try a seasonal brew
With many local breweries, there is always something new to try. Most breweries add a seasonal rotation to their list of offerings in the fall. Head to Storm Peak Brewing Company or Mountain Tap Brewery to try one out.
Eat something pumpkin
Most restaurants will add a little pumpkin into the menu around this time of year. Grab a seat outside somewhere and indulge!
Pick up seasonal produce at the local farmer’s market
Steamboat offers a farmer’s market that runs each Saturday in the summer through the middle of September. After Labor Day, the crowds die down and the fall produce comes out. The last Saturday of the farmer’s market includes a chili contest featuring local chefs; check the date to see if you can try some award-winning chili.
Spot a Sandhill Crane
In the early fall, hundreds of Sandhill Cranes flock to Steamboat to rest on their migration south. The town even hosts a crane festival each September to honor them. Look for them in wetlands and prepare to be amazed by these graceful birds.
Mountain bike on Buffalo Pass
The Flash of Gold trail on Buffalo Pass lives up to its name each fall as the leaves on the Aspens that surround the trail turn bright yellow. Grab your mountain bike and enjoy a very scenic ride.
Visit an art gallery
While rainy days are usually few and far between, they do happen in the fall – even worse, you might experience some early October snow! If this happens, take advantage of all that downtown Steamboat has to offer. With a vibrant culture scene, you can pop into one of the many art galleries that line Lincoln Avenue to spend the day inside if need be.
Have a soak
Cooler fall temperatures often mean that it’s too cold for swimming, but not in Steamboat! Go for a swim in the warm water of the Old Town Hot Springs, located right in downtown Steamboat.
Update your fall wardrobe
Lincoln Avenue offers top notch shopping with tons of local boutiques. There is something for everyone on your list – including you! For fall staples at an affordable price, try Chrysalis or Ruby Jane Boutique. For authentic Western wear, pop into F.M. Light & Sons.
Get dressed up for the Halloween Stroll
If you’re in town for Halloween, throw on a costume and head downtown for the annual Halloween Stroll which takes place smack dab in the middle of Lincoln Avenue. Youngsters and adults alike will enjoy trick-or-treating at local businesses, traipsing through haunted houses and watching all the fun costumes go by.
